Salamanca is the university city by excellence, known in the whole world for this and for its artistic richness: cathedrals, palaces, churches... of artistic styles such as romanesque, gothic, plateresque y barroque.
Situated on the banks of the river Tormes, its geographical extensión is 12.336 Km², and It currently has159.000 inhabitants.
Salamanca, in spite of its extreme weather (cold and dry winter and warm summer), has many charms which make the stay of those who visit it a very pleasant one, a city where those activities related to tourism and free time are essential. Salamanca was the European City of Culture in the year 2002. Music, dancing, exhibitions, street shows...
The tourism in Salamanca is complemented by its original gastronomy and its popular festivities.
The University provides accommodation for those ERASMUS students who require it and indicate so on the accommodation form. This consists of single rooms in private flats, with access to a kitchen, usually with other students.
The price is around 180euros per person, plus bills, which fluctuate between 6 and 25euros a month. The full amount must always be paid in advance. The University is an intermediary, and the contract is established directly between the student and the landlord. It is assumed that the student who uses the University facilities to find Accommodation will meet his/her initial commitment to remain there. Sometimes you have to pay a retainer before arriving.
If you need the University to find accommodation for you, please fill in the relevant section in the application form, which you will have been given by the international exchange co-ordinator from your department, and send it to the International Relations Service at least three months prior to arrival in Salamanca, you may also fillitin on-line (www.upsa.es). The International Relations Service will begin the relevant procedures upon receiving the form. Once accommodation has been found the International Relations Service will send a letter to the address you have indicated on the application form. This letter will tell you the address of the flat and the owner's phone number. Fifthteen days before arriving in Salamanca you must ring the owners and inform them of when you will be arriving in Salamanca and fix a time to meet in the flat.
If required, the International Relations Service can arrange for you to be met by a group of students upon your arrival. If this is the case you should also notify them of the date and time of your arrival in Salamanca.
If you prefer to find accomodation yourself (it is quite easy in Salamanca) it is useful to consult the local press, such as the papers "La Ocasión" and "Teleanuncio", which include a selection of flats for rent. Also on the University noticeboards, and those of nearby cafes you can find numerous notices from students looking for flatmates. In that case the University can provide you with addresses of a Youth Hostel or similar for the first days, and on your arrival at Salamanca the International Relations Service will help you to find permanent accommodation.
